Description
A survey of a historically vital region. It will include an overview of the area known as the Cradle of Civilizations and Monotheism, as well as the rise of the Islamic Caliphate, the rise and fall of the Ottoman Empire, and the late 19th and 20th Centuries European imperialism and colonialism. The greatest emphasis, however, will be on the modern period. In order to fully comprehend the contemporary situation, it is necessary to include a historical examination of the cultural and religious diversity, as well as the political complexity of the people and states which comprise the so-called Middle East. 3 Lecture hours. Restriction: Freshman 2 or higher or permission of the instructor. Offered: Annually
